We’re slowly approaching week three of 2018, and here I am wishing you a Happy New Year but better late than never I suppose (insert black girl shrugging emoji). Anyway, I hope your year is off to a great start! Last week, I attended an annual holiday party at my former place of employment and it has me thinking on something that I hope to do more of this year and that is to celebrate myself!
Throughout the years, I’ve spared no expense when it came to making others happy. I’ve attended baby and bridal showers, both adult and child birthday bashes, walked in weddings, saw students off on prom and graduations and much more, always on time, hardly ever empty-handed.
While these types of things are normal, expected and fun to celebrate, they can also be exhausting, time consuming and frequent. I begun to notice that I was constantly running to other people’s events, yet I can count on one hand how many “Happy Birthday” cards or random “just-checking-to-see-how-you were-doing” calls I received. Sad! And what’s worse is, the one time you actually say no, some people make it seem as if you have never supported them at all!
But alas, a new day has arrived. While I still plan to be a good support system to my friends and family, I have to be just as good to myself. No more being afraid to spend $20 on myself while giving my last to everyone else! No more going out of my way for other people’s birthday’s when all I get is a HBD on my Facebook wall! We have to do better Ladies and Gents! Let’s reclaim our time in 2018!
